Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has revealed how they were able to prevent Al Ahly from scoring in their Caf Champions League Group A encounter in Egypt this past Saturday.
The Tshwane giants were finally able to defeat the Red Eagles in the Caf Champions League after they secured a 1-0 victory at the Cairo International Stadium, with Thapelo Morena scoring the decisive goal.
With three matches remaining in the group, Sundowns are atop Group A with seven points from three games, having won two and drawn one game, while Ahly are placed third with one point in three games, yet to secure their first group-stage win.
Onyango insists his side did exactly what they set out to do by preventing Ahly from playing their own style of game.
“Our objective was to prevent them from reaching our goal,” Onyango told beIN Sport in a post-match interview.
“Al Ahly is a great team, so we made sure to not allow them to play at their usual level.
“We had many chances, but in the end, we scored only one and we were able to win,” he added.
Mamelodi Sundowns will now turn their attention back to the DStv Premiership when they travel to the Mbombela Stadium to take on TS Galaxy on Wednesday evening, with kick-off set for 7:30pm.
