Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane believes his side suffered defeat by Wydad Casablanca in Monday’s Caf Champions League final as the game was not played on equal footing.
The decision by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to allow the final to be held in Morocco for a second consecutive year at the home ground of Wydad was questioned by many in the buildup to the game.
The Egyptian giants even appealed to CAS for a venue change but their calls fell on deaf ears.
The game took place as scheduled and Mosimane blamed the decision- makers at Caf for their defeat.
“The best team today is the one who lost. We can only talk about winning or losing when we play on a neutral ground and when both sides have an equal number of fans. I think those who were behind this decision are happy today,” said Mosimane.
Despite dominating large parts of the game, the defending champions were not clinical enough while the opposition was.
“Some people ask me about the formation and the gameplan as we lost. I remind them that we used the same formation when we beat Raja in the quarter-finals. Football is about scoring goals. Tau and Mohamed Sherif both missed opportunities,” said Mosimane.
The former Bafana Bafana coach missed out on the chance to make history by winning the Champions League three times in a row.
Despite the disappointment Ahly can still end the season on a high, winning the Egyptian Premier League and Egyptian Cup glory. Mosimane’s team are currently in third position on the Egyptian top- flight log and seven points adrift of first-placed Zamalek, but they have played four games fewer than the first-placed side.
Mosimane’s side will return to action when they play against Masry Salloum in the Egypt Cup round of 32 on Sunday, 12 June.
