Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has dedicated the Citizens’ victory over SuperSport United in the MTN8 final to his wife Stacey Munro.
The Citizens redeemed themselves after claiming a 4-1 win on penalties over United to clinch the top eight trophy after failing to secure the title in last year’s final against the same opponents.
The 40-year-old, who secured his first piece of silverware as a coach, faced a difficult time on a personal level after his wife was admitted to hospital when her lung collapsed. She subsequently received surgery earlier this week.
McCarthy was forced to miss City’s 2-2 draw against Orlando Pirates in the Absa Premiership when his wife was in hospital.
The Bafana Bafana legend, who won the same trophy as an Orlando Pirates player back in 2010, says his side’s win was in her honour as she is still recovering from the operation.
‘I want to say to my wife at home, this one is for her. It’s been difficult, Stacey. I hope you’re watching. I want you to recover well,’ McCarthy told the media.
Cape Town City will now turn their attention back to the Absa Premiership when they take on Bidvest Wits at Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday.
