The victory goes to the players – McCarthy

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy says he is pleased that his game plan against Bidvest Wits paid off after beating them 2-1 in the MTN8 semi-final.

The Citizens progressed to the finals of the competition after claiming a 3-1 aggregate win over the Clever Boys in their two-legged fixture.

McCarthy says he is pleased with the dedication his side showed to reached the final, having now claimed three wins out of three in all competitions.

“Three games three wins, I know I’m far from a thousand games as a manager, but I’m not doing too bad, hey,” McCarthy told SuperSport TV.

“I’m delighted for the team. I’m delighted for the Cape Town City fans. I’m delighted for the players you know, because they’re the ones who are putting the work in every single day.

“The coaches, we work up to a certain degree, but once they cross that line it’s all up to them. They fought for it, so the victory goes to them.”

The 39-year-old coach insists Wits played right into their hands when they introduced Eleazar Rodgers, claiming that they planned for Wits’ long balls to the striker.

“We planned for when they were going to play direct long balls to Rodgers, with flicks on second balls. First half we were a little bit disoriented because Gavin Hunt changed his team completely,” he added.

“They didn’t play to what we expected them to do. After we got back into the game and they changed it to Rodgers and [Daine] Klate, they played right into our hands because we knew how to cancel them out, hit them on a counter and that’s exactly what happened.

“I’m delighted for ‘Major’ [Lehohonolo Majoro] for getting his goal. It’s nice to see when it pays off.”

Cape Town City will be hoping to continue their winning ways when they take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premiership on Wednesday.

The match at the Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 19:30.
