Arsenal have officially confirmed that they have sacked head coach Unai Emery after the club’s worst run of form in 27 years.
The Gunners are winless in their last seven matches following their 2-1 defeat to Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League encounter on Thursday.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the Gunners in front in the first half before the Bundesliga side mounted a comeback after the break in front of a small and unhappy crowd at the Emirates.
Arsenal were booed off the pitch by their own supporters at full-time and many fans held up “Emery Out” banners throughout the game.
It has now been confirmed that Emery has been sacked after failing to oversee a victory in the last seven matches and that Freddie Ljungberg will take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach.
The club released the following statement on the matter, which reads:
We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team.
Speaking on behalf of the Arsenal board and our owners Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, Josh Kroenke said: ‘Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.’
The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.
We have asked Freddie Ljungberg to take responsibility for the first team as interim head coach. We have full confidence in Freddie to take us forward.
The search for a new head coach is underway and we will make a further announcement when that process is complete.
