The South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed that Bafana Bafana midfielder Bongani Zungu will not be available for selection for the first-leg 2018 World Cup qualifier against Senegal.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns man was shown a red card in South Africa”s 3-1 win against Burkina Faso. Zungu faced the possibility of a two-match ban for violent conduct, however Safa confirmed that the matter was dealt with by the Fifa disciplinary committee, who decided against an extra match ban.
“The player Bongani Zungu is regarded as having breached art. 48 par.1 c) of the Fifa disciplinary code in the match played between South Africa and Burkina Faso,” the statement by Safa read.
“The player is suspended for one (1) match, including automatic suspension, which will be served in the match between South Africa and Senegal of 10 November 2017,” Fifa said in a statement.
Stuart Baxter”s charges face the Indomitable Lions on Friday 10 November 2017 in Polokwane, before travelling to Darka for the second leg on Tuesday 14 November 2017.
